Choosing a Budget Home Security Camera Won’t Cut It
Let’s be honest here for a second. On bad days, I too have decided to invest in some mainstream equipment. As a result, I just bought the cheapest or the first item that I saw on the rack and went home with products which were of questionable quality.
When it comes to investing in home security, there should be no room for mistakes like these. An impeccable choice is even more important if we live in a neighborhood where the crime rate is moderate to high. It goes without saying that investing in products with low-performance will make things much easier for intruders.
The previous statement is also true for home security cameras. All manufacturers promise outstanding performance, clear vision, great connectivity, and overall durability. However, once we put these products to the test, we realize that manufacturers’ statements are usually exaggerated. That’s why articles like this Reolink Argus review are a good starting point for all those who wish to invest in a certain product.
When I decided to buy a security camera, I cleared my schedule in order to have enough time to check and test every aspect of available products. I looked online for reviews and recommendations. I spent a considerable amount of time on different forums, and I read different discussions on the matter. What’s more, I also asked my friends and acquaintances to share their experiences.
However, I probably got the most beneficial pieces of advice from my neighbors. That’s how I found out about the Reolink’s security cameras in the first place. Finally, I bought one and decided to write this Reolink Argus review.
Why Every Home Should Have at Least One Security Camera
According to the FBI, burglaries of residential properties accounted for 62.7% of all burglary offenses in the US in 2017. That means that our homes are more susceptible to burglar attacks than, let’s say, banks and stores.
The reason for that is probably the fact that criminal offenders find it more convenient to break into people’s homes, where security is in most cases non-existent. Even though they usually gain much less, they also put themselves at minimum risk of getting caught. As a result, people lose their valuable possessions, and the culprits are never brought to justice.
Now, I’m not saying that burglars are not the only ones that should be held responsible for such crimes. However, I believe that it is unreasonable to think that the burglary rate will drop to zero in the foreseeable future. So, it is also our responsibility to take the necessary steps in order to secure our homes and properties.
Besides alarms, investing in security cameras is a must. They can deter robbers, provide authorities with evidence, and alert us in real time about suspicious activity on our property. Ever since I got the Reolink Argus camera, my mind is at peace. I just know I’ll be able to react in a timely manner if something unexpected occurs while I’m not around.
What Differentiates Reolink Argus From the Rest
Most of the products in this range have similar characteristics. Yet, one of the main reasons why I’ve decided to write a Reolink Argus review is because I’ve found some important differences which I almost overlooked.
For example, some competing products offer cloud-based storage. At first, that sounded great, and I almost bought one of them. However, when I looked more closely, I realized that I could use the cloud-based storage for free only for the first seven days. Now, why would I pay for cloud storage every single month when it can potentially get hacked? This especially makes no sense to me because I can have a security camera which has its own SD card.
For me, it’s not a hassle to empty the SD card from time to time. Also, I’m the only one who has control over the footage. That way, I’m sure that evidence won’t disappear if someone tries to break into my home.
Furthermore, some competing products can’t work by themselves. What do I mean by that? Some of them require base stations or sync modules. These features can affect our liberty to place the cameras wherever we want.
I should also mention that Reolink Argus has a 130° field of view which isn’t the case with some other cameras. The same goes for the two-way audio. All of this has affected my decision to invest in this camera over others which are similar. The following Reolink Argus Review section will further expand on what makes it special.
How I’ve Optimized Reolink Argus for My Home
Sometimes it’s not just about the product; it’s also about how we decide to use it. When it comes to security cameras, it is vital to deduce the most vulnerable part of our property and place them there.
The perfect spot can depend on the neighborhood, type of property, its size and nearby streets and back alleys. In my case, the front door is well-secured and the burglars would have a hard time breaking it.
Yet, at the back, I have off-street windows with a lot of blind spots. These windows can actually serve as a good point of entry. The burglars can hide behind the plants that grow in my neighbor’s backyard. They could easily take their time to break the windows without making too much noise, and avoid being spotted.
So, I’ve decided to install my Reolink Argus near one of those windows. Now I have a clear view of even the slightest activity that happens behind my house.
Furthermore, when it’s cloudy outside, some points of our homes may be less visible on camera. Also, the sun can cast long shadows and thus hide the facial features of the potential intruder. Hence, I would advise making sure that the area in which we install the security camera also provides enough lighting at any time of the day and in different weather conditions.

Reolink Argus Review
I forgot to mention the initial reason why I’ve taken this product into consideration in the first place and decided to write the Reolink Argus review.
A few years back, I was out of town on business for a couple of days. One morning I got a call from the sheriff’s office in my town. They’ve said that someone tried to break into my home last night and that they’ve apprehended him. Namely, the person claimed that he was my relative.
What really happened is that I’ve asked my uncle to stay at my place while I’m away and take care of my Labrador. One of the neighbors spotted him and called the police immediately.
Even though the event sounds silly to me now, it really opened my eyes when it comes to my home’s security. That’s why I decided to invest in reliable surveillance which would instantly notify me if there’s an intruder on my property.
Reolink’s Argus is a rechargeable home security camera that is completely wire-free and works on Wi-Fi. It is also the first product in the reputable Argus series. Yet, that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t satisfied with its features, even though it has its more modern counterparts like Reolink Argus Pro and Reolink Argus 2.
The manufacturer promises flexible powering options. It also claims that this product is money-saving due to low power consumption.
The box contains extra features, but without any clutter and space-consuming stuff. Aside from the Reolink Argus camera, there are 4 non-rechargeable CR123A batteries. However, users can later switch to rechargeable ones if they prefer so. Furthermore, there is also a magnetic and security wall mount.
So who should choose Reolink Argus? Well, to be honest, this product is perfect for all those who’ve never installed a security camera before. It’s easy to use, and it won’t break the bank. I’ve figured out everything in less than a day and I could test it while I was on my way to work the next morning I could easily monitor the back of my house on my smartphone.
What’s more, choosing Reolink Argus in order to save a coin or two is also a good idea. Why? Because it lists most of the features that Reolink Argus 2 has to offer and it’s still somewhat cheaper. The design still holds well today. So, it won’t look like just another outdated piece of equipment that sticks out on our front porches.
Wire-Free Technology and SD Card Storage
As a result, it is highly mobile, and users can place it even it the most inaccessible corners of their homes. This feature helps to avoid blind spots and allows placing the camera exactly where it provides the most coverage. Users usually store the footage on a 16GB SD card. However, this product also supports 64GB SD cards.
Yet, thanks to the weatherproof characteristics of Reolink Argus, we can forget about worrying the next storm causing malfunctions.
Smart PIR Motion Sensor
Once this sensor detects motion, users receive real-time snapshots on their e-mail. Moreover, they will also get push notifications for smartphones and voice alerts. This motion sensor is probably my favorite feature because I feel safe by knowing that I will get notified immediately if there’s an intruder on my property.
1080p Full HD & High-Quality Day/Night Vision
However, the manufacturer also claims that Reolink Argus is able to capture every single detail even in the dark. I believe that this is a bit far-fetched for a security camera of this type.
On the other hand, users will be able to see most of the things clearly both on the inside or the outside of their property.
What’s good about this app is that it provides a clear and user-friendly interface. Furthermore, it’s available on multiple devices and operating systems like iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac.
Two-way Audio Support
It has a built-in speaker and microphone which can help capture what the potential intruders are talking about. Thus, we’ll have well-rounded evidence for the authorities in case of burglary.
This Version has been phaseout, Please Check our Other Recommendations:
Reolink Argus is, above all, a reliable home security camera. Unlike some other products, this one actually meets most of the performance claims made by the manufacturer. Its features work in unison like a Swiss clock.
Yet, if I would have to list one feature as my favorite in this Reolink Argus review, it would definitely be the motion sensor. Yes, it can be aggressive and even slightly annoying at times. But thanks to the e-mail screenshots and real-time push notifications, I feel at peace when I’m away from home.
